The Columbarium at Grace Episcopal Church

The Columbarium at Grace Episcopal Church in Brunswick, Maryland is open to all people of good will…

A columbarium is a sacred resting place for the cremated remains (cremains) of a deceased person. Since the very earliest days of Christianity, faithful people have kept the remains of loved ones inside churches using crypts or vaults. Where land was readily available, Christians buried their dead in the churchyard adjacent to the church.

In modern times, there is a return to ancient practice for three reasons:

1. The increasingly high cost of funerals and the decreasing availability of real estate for cemeteries,

2. The decidedly lower cost of cremation and columbarium space—even with decidedly more dignity,

3. The more widespread desire of Christians to express their Faith by remaining literally close to their church, even in death.

Expenses for an ordinary dignified traditional funeral today run between $6000 and $10,000. A dignified funeral followed by cremation and reposition of cremains in a columbarium is less than half as expensive as the traditional funeral.
